What to do with low ceilings?
studio art director
Most of the ways to deal with this problem are aimed at creating the effect of space going to infinity. To do this, you can make the ceiling black - this technique is becoming more popular, although it is not suitable for every interior. It is suitable for minimalism, hi-tech, perhaps modern, urban interiors, loft-style rooms. My advice is not to darken the entire ceiling, but to break the space: a frieze or beams of light shades will help to create a feeling of different levels, to deceive the eye, and this is our task.
To give the ceiling surface an extra volume, murals and bas-reliefs are needed. The drawing should be chosen light and placed it again not on the entire plane, but on the part of the ceiling. Do not be alarmed by the word "bas-relief": this is not about massive classical stucco molding, but about voluminous elements in the form of, for example, numbers or inscriptions.
Another option is the use of prints. Now the image can be printed on any surface and mounted on any ceiling. The material may be a self-adhesive film, paper, fabric, wood.
The easiest way is to make a mirror ceiling. But it is more suitable for public buildings, moreover, they did so at the end of the last century. A modern approach to design and the development of technology make it possible to find more interesting options.
To make the ceiling higher, you need to visually increase the height of the walls. Various verticals will help in this: vertical stripes on the walls, pseudo-beams and other wooden elements, high doors, decorative stairs.
If this corresponds to the style of the interior, in particular for lofts and rooms in the Scandinavian style, I advise you to use unconventional materials for decorating the ceiling - textiles or wood with a pronounced texture. It seems that this contradicts the basic principle - to make the low ceiling as inconspicuous as possible, but this technique also works. If you and your guests are forced to observe the ceiling in close proximity, let there be another surface in the room that is interesting to look at.
The interior also forms light. The contour lighting located around the perimeter visually raises the ceiling. To do this, use a flexible LED strip, which, as a rule, is placed behind the eaves of drywall. By the way, from such a tape, you can mount light lines on the walls with a transition to the ceiling - they will set the vertical and make the boundary between the wall and the ceiling less pronounced.
